The temps were cold and the wind was brisk, but that didn’t stop us from making the climb. I’m not going to say I didn’t struggle, I really did. In fact, about two-thirds of he way up and really sucking wind, I just stood there wondering why I got out of bed to do this when suddenly, I saw a women about 50 feet ahead of me just drop to the ground and dropped her head. Worried that she may have been hurt, I walked up to her and asked if she was alright. She explained to me that this was her first time climbing the mountain and she decided that she would just stay here and watch the sunrise. I told her that she wouldn’t be able to see the sunrise from where she was sitting and pointed to the top and said “the sun will rise just up there”. I put out my hand and she grabbed it and we walked the rest of the way together. I never got her name, but she thanked me when we reached the top and we parted ways. Probably wont ever forget that.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that there were about a hundred or so other folks that made the hike. Once we got settled in, we pulled out our coffee and morning snacks and enjoined the view. Shortly there after, we noticed a group of men changing clothes and setting unpacking drums right beside us. This group of men gifted us with beautiful drumming performance. Beating on their drums they danced as they made their way around a water filled crater while we all watched in awe. The kids really got a kick out the performance and started dancing to the beat of the music.
Afterwards, we all just sat around and enjoyed the beautiful morning sipping on cocoa and coffee. I can’t explain the peace and warmth that came over me; a truly happy moment in my life.
This was no ordinary day, this was New Years Day; a day of new beginnings, attitudes, habits, and outlooks. It’s the one time of the year that you can put the past behind you and get a fresh start on your future. We wanted to start the year off with something beautiful and positive; something that would bring inspiration to us. That’s what it did.
For me, I am not going to announce any new resolutions; I’m still working on the resolutions that I’ve set for the past 50 years. Instead, I am going to spend my time focusing on being healthy and happy with what I already have in my life.
Happy New Year Everyone
