I know it’s been a while and I’m sorry about that. I haven’t gone anywhere, in fact, Kristy and I; along with our friends, Deena, Molly, Courtney, and Linda just got back from Lake Lanier’s My First/Next Triathlon. Except for Linda, who was not only our support, but our official photographer, all participated and completed the triathlon.

May I present to you the Lake Lanier, My First/Next Triathlons, Triathletes.

Different than 2010, we rented a cabin for the entire weekend where we were able to enjoy the fruits of our labor.

Before I get into the fruit, let me give you some highlights. The night before the race, we checked into our cottage and then headed out for our pre-race dinner. We dined at the Sunset Cove restaurant. The 2011 menu differed greatly than the 2010 menu. There was no chicken, no pasta, or any good substitutes so, finding a healthy meal was a real challenge. I settled for the grilled grouper sandwich which came with a Dixie cup of pasta salad and a boat load of french fries. I ate the sandwich along with the pasta salad and had a few fries.

After dinner, we went and picked up our race packets and headed back to the cottage to make our final race day preparations. We finished with our prep and headed to bed so we could get plenty of rest. Unfortunately, sleeping in a strange bed made it a bit difficult to fall asleep. I think the last time I looked at the clock it was 11:00 PM.

Unable to hit the snooze button when the alarm went off at 5:00 AM, I rolled out of the bed and started getting ready. I made a pot of coffee while Kristy started making our breakfast which consisted of 1/2 of a whole wheat bagel with a little peanut butter on top. I washed it down with a banana and a small cup of coffee. Everyone was up by then doing their own morning rituals.

All dressed up and ready to go we loaded up the gear and headed to the race start. We all set up our gear in the transition area and then head to the water to get ready for the first leg of the race – the quarter mile swim.

Courtney, Deena, and I were in the second wave of the swim, while Kristy and Molly were in the last wave. When the race started we all jumped in and starting swimming as hard as we could. Our goal was to get as far away from people as possible. For me, that was not easy. I stayed closer to the shore than the others did due to not feeling confident enough to tread into deeper water. At one point, I got kicked and bumped into so many time that I panicked a little and had to stop swimming for a moment. I regained my composure and started again. I looked over towards the shore and noticed that one of the life guards was following me as I swam. I guess he didn’t have much faith in my swimming abilities either.

After the swim, we had to run about a third of a mile in our bare feet back to the transition  area. Still in my swim suit, and the clock ticking, I jumped on my bike and took off for the 12 mile ride. Apparently, I blocked out the number of hills there were back in 2010, because I was surprised by how many I encountered. Still, I felt strong and was determined to really make up some time despite the hills. Over all, it was a great ride and I was proud of how I attacked the hills the way I did. 53 minutes and 13 seconds later, I arrived back at the transition are to start the 3.2 mile run.

This is where most of my problems occurred. When I arrived in the transition area, I dropped everything, changed my shoes and took off running. About half way out of the parking lot, I realized that I was not wearing my shirt with my number, nor was I wearing my shorts that carried my iPod. I turned around and ran back and put my clothes on. Just as I left the parking lot, then realized that I failed to take off my swim shirt before I put on my running shirt. It was too hot to wear both, and I wasn’t about to turn around again, so I just ripped off both tops, put my running shirt on and stuffed my swim shirt under a rock in the wooded area of the race.

By the time I took off running the temperature was close to 90 degrees. The heat was beginning to suck the life out of me. Feeling tired and fatigued, I reached into my shorts to grab a pack of goo to help me get that final boost I needed to finish the race. Struggling to get the pack out of my pocket, I realized that my shorts were on backwards. At this point I didn’t care and kept going.

2 hours, 8 minutes and 7 seconds after starting the race, I crossed the finish line where Deena and Courtney were waiting for me. I did it again, I completed my second triathlon.All we had left to do now is wait for our fellow comrades to cross the line and complete their first triathlon.

Notmuch later, Molly came running across the line looking as strong as she did when she left for the run. She looked great and finished strong. She did admit that the race was much harder than she thought but you couldn’t tell that by the way she took it on. Congrats Molly.

While waiting for Kristy to arrive, I decided to go back and see if I could find where I stashed my swim shirt. Pleasantly surprised, I found it and brought it back. I didn’t want to loose it. I just paid $30 bucks for that shirt.

As I looked up, I saw Kristy running down the final stretch of the race. By the way I was acting, you would have thought that I had money on her. I was jumping up and down cheering her on. I could tell it was working too. Suddenly, she kicked in to gear and sprinted across the finish line. I was so happy for her, that I ran to her and started hugging her. Poor Kristy was still trying catch her breath and I’m all over her.

I cannot tell you how proud I was of Kristy for running this race. Kristy hates venturing out of her comfort zone and this race, was way, way out there for her.

After the commotion was over, we picked up our t-shirts and went back to the transition area to pick up our gear. Another triathlon under my belt.

Hot and exhausted, we headed back to the cottage where we popped open a bottle of champagne and toasted our success.

After our toast, Deena made us a great breakfast of bacon and eggs. We gobbled that down like nobody’s business. Thanks Deena for being our master chef.

Here come the fruit part. After a short recovery, we put on our swim suits and headed to the hotel pool where we hung out by the pool and enjoyed a few cocktails. The rum runners went down very nicely. I was grateful that we decided to stay the entire weekend. It was nice not having to run back and check out of the cabin.

Now that the race is over, Kristy and I have already started thinking about the next one in September. The race is in Florida and it is an ocean swim. Struggling the way I did in the lake, I have a lot of work ahead of me to get ready for September.

The Results Are In

First thing I did this morning was to get on the scale. When I stepped on, I was totally blown away. I lost 8.1 pounds. WHAT???? This is such a relief to me. I have been on a downward spiral for about a month now, all at my own fault I might ad, and I was getting really frustrated. It didn’t matter how little I ate, if I ate one wrong thing, gained weight.

To be honest, I didn’t have the most perfect eating week, but I think, with the serious workouts I had this week along with the decrease in my alcohol consumption, equaled a big weight loss. I know I can’t expect results like this every week, but I am really excited to see what next week brings me.

No Excuse

Because of an early work meeting this morning, I was unable to join on my fellow campers at boot camp today.  I hated that I had to miss today, but to be honest, I was so sore this morning that I’m not sure I would have been able to do anything. Seriously, I could barely get out of bed with out feeling like I had just got the crap beat out of me.

As the day went on my soreness had eased and since I was unable to make boot camp, Kristy and will go to gym instead. Just because I didn’t get a work out in this morning, doesn’t mean I can’t get one in this evening. The triathlon is getting closer and closer and I have to be ready for it. My goal is to beat my time last year which was 2 hours and 15 minutes and if I can’t run a mile without stopping, what’s the point?

New Enthusiasm

I want to start off by thanking everyone for their words of encouragement since my last post. It’s really nice to see that people are actually reading my blog.

One thing I have come to realize is this blog is a source of inspiration for me. I think my enthusiasm was beginning to fade because I wasn’t as diligent as I should have been about keeping my blog updated. Writing like this is almost therapeutic for me. It forces me to focus on what I am doing and helps me stay on track.

So, I am going to make a promise. Starting today, at the beginning of each week, I am going to pick a goal and spend the entire week accomplishing that one goal and then report back to you.

This weeks goal will be: Writing in my blog every day.
