Be Prepared

The biggest problem I have encountered so far is making sure I have plenty of food to eat when I go to work everyday. Now that I’m doing boot camp, my prep time has been severely cut. By the time I get back from camp, I have about 10 minutes to prepare my food for the day before I have to jump into the shower.

In the past, if I didn’t have time to make my breakfast or lunch before I went to work, I would wing it and eat out that day. Unfortunately, as hard as I try, I don’t always make the best food choices. For example; we have a Chick-Fil-A in our building. Before I would get settled at my desk, I would run down stairs and grab a chicken biscuit and a diet coke. To save calories, I would skip the hash browns. Luckily, we also have a Subway close by so I would go there for lunch and can get a way with making some good choices. For those of you who haven’t heard, Subway now serves breakfast and it’s pretty darn good. So if you did forget to bring something for breakfast, I highly recommend trying the egg white on flat bread. You can load it with veggies and it will definitely fill you up.

Now that my primary focus is my weight and fitness level, I spend a lot more time preparing my food for the day and because I have so little time to prepare my food, I now break it up into two sessions. At night, I will prepare items like my breakfast and snacks before I go to bed and in the morning, because I can’t stand soggy food, I will make items like my sandwiches.

Below is a sample of the food I will eat during the work day.

Breakfast – Bagel, egg, cheese, and Canadian bacon sandwich, Banana and a cup of coffee

Snack – Apple with a piece of string cheese

Lunch– Turkey wrap (low carb tortilla, 2 oz Boar’s Head Turkey, 1 oz fresh goat cheese, big handfull of fresh spinach), 1 package of steamed brussels sprouts and a small bowl of fresh mixed fruit

Snack – 1/2 cup of low fat cottage cheese, with fresh mixed fruit.

Other snack items I try to keep on hand are fresh, raw almonds, Greek yogurt (I personally like Chobani) and frozen grapes. Frozen grapes are a great snack because they take a little longer to eat and it’s almost like having a frozen treat.

  1. I try to package things into serving sizes when i get home from the grocery store. For example, fruit in individual containers, carrots in baggies, popcorn in baggies, etc. That makes it much easier in the mornings to just grab and go.

  2. Here’s a link to the OBC blog post about bfast on the go I thought you may like!
